Al Led the Effort - The Bush Doctrine

And I thought the Bush Doctrine was "catapult(ing) the propaganda"
...
As you -- as I mentioned to you earlier, we're going to redesign the current system. If you've retired, you don't have anything to worry about -- third time I've said that. (Laughter.) I'll probably say it three more times. See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda. (Applause.)

As the president said in Shanghai, this is a fight to save the civilized world and values common to the West, to Asia and to Islam. This is a struggle against evil, against an enemy that rejoices in the murder of innocent, unsuspecting human beings. That is why people in every part of the world and of all faiths stand together against this foe.

The president has made very clear that in this conflict there is no neutral ground; those who harbor terrorists share guilt for the acts they commit.

CHENEY: Under the Bush doctrine, a regime that harbors or supports terrorists will be regarded as hostile to the United States of America.

Tomorrow, APEC leaders will pledge to work together to deny the terrorists any sanctuary, any funding, any material or moral support. Together, we will, patiently and diligently, pursue the terrorists from place to place until justice is done.

The first use I could find of the words "Bush Doctrine" were on 21 Nov 01. That reference by Dick Cheney pointed to the speech given by President Bush the day before at the APEC conference in Shanghai. Eight days later, the president references the doctrine when making it clear the new us attorneys are on the front lines of that war. And what do you know, there is Al Gonzales, being thanked by the president for leading "the effort to scour the country for the best to serve as U.S. attorneys."
There is John Ashcroft, heading the Department of Justice, and the president joking that he is in the Army. That means, (ha ha,) that he follows, as all in the military do, the orders of the commander in chief.

November 29, 2001
President Says U.S. Attorneys on Front Line in War
Remarks by the President to U.S. Attorneys Conference

I guess we call you General. (Laughter.) That means you all are in the Army. (Laughter.) And I am glad you are.
...
And where's Al Gonzales, who is my -- (applause.) Al led the effort to scour the country for the best to serve as U.S. attorneys, and I appreciate his hard work. And I suspect you new U.S. attorneys appreciate his hard work, as well. (Laughter.)
...
And as we speak, we're enforcing the doctrine that makes it plain that not only do we seek the terrorists, but we also hold governments that harbor them and feed them and house them and hide them accountable for their behavior, as well.
...
But there is no doubt about our intentions, and there shouldn't be. Those who plot terror, and those who help them, will be held accountable in America. That's what we're going to do. Protecting the innocent against violence is a solemn duty of this country. It is our most important responsibility now. And all of us in this room accept that responsibility. And we will tell the American people plainly, we will fulfill that responsibility.

To meet that obligation, a wartime reorganization is underway at the Justice Department. More investigators will go to front lines. The federal government will work more closely with state and local authorities -- and so will you. Agents will receive better training and new technology, to help track and capture terrorists or those who support them. And these changes are essential, and I want to thank the Attorney General and Director Mueller for beginning this transformation.

I have also reserved the option of trial by military commission for foreign terrorists who wage war against our country. Non-citizens, non-U.S. citizens who plan and/or commit mass murder are more than criminal suspects. They are unlawful combatants who seek to destroy our country and our way of life. And if I determine that it is in the national security interest of our great land to try by military commission those who make war on America, then we will do so. (Applause.)

So what is the Bush Doctrine really?
"You're paid to lie"

These 27 campaign stops by Vice President Dick Cheney (2004) caught my eye for some reason and since they are are listed on the White House web site under very official reasons, for instance, "Issues Budget Management Education Energy Health Care Homeland Security Hurricane Recovery Immigration ..." I'm wondering, did the RNC pay for these trips or did we?

MRS. CHENEY: ... John Kerry tries to put a bunch of fancy, fancy talk -- tried to disguise that record, sort of like his fancy haircut, fancy manicure, tried to disguise the whole thing. (Laughter.) But there is nothing you can do to really -- to really obscure that record. You can try, though. And in Wyoming, we've got a saying for what it is when you keep trying to make something that's not so good look good, we call it putting lipstick on a pig. (Laughter.) Yes. (Applause.) MRS. CHENEY: Even Katie is in the act now. She's got an idea. All right, this is going to be another of "Cheneys' Greatest Hits." This one has to do with the fact that John Kerry has a completely and totally weak record on national security issues, that he's had a record for 30 years of weakness on national security issues. But --

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, he's working very hard to cover it up. Now, we got into the campaign, of course, and he's trying hard to cover up the fact that he voted against the first Gulf War; against Operation Desert Storm; voted against most of the weapons systems that President Reagan used to keep the peace and win the Cold War. But the point is that no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much spin he tries to put on it, that you can't cover that record up with a little tough talk during the course of the campaign, that as we say in Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but in the end of the day, it's still a pig. (Laughter and applause.) The amazing thing is you can tell that story in any state in America and they get it. (Laughter.) You got anything you want to add --
